Secure Information Hiding System Using Steganography
A CSE 3206 software engineering project focused on hiding and extracting secret information inside digital media with optional password protection, user login, and logging for embed/extract operations.
Description
Secure Information Hiding System Using Steganography is a software engineering lab project focused on hiding confidential information inside digital media files. The system lets authenticated users embed secret text or files into a cover media file, optionally protect the hidden payload with a password, and later extract the original data when the correct credentials are provided.
The project demonstrates how steganography can be combined with authentication, password-based access control, validation, and operation logging to create a controlled workflow for secure information hiding.
Key Features
- User registration and login using username and password credentials.
- Cover media upload for hiding secret information.
- Support for secret text or secret file input.
- Optional password protection for hidden payloads.
- Steganographic embedding that generates a downloadable stego file.
- Stego file upload for later extraction.
- Password validation before revealing hidden data.
- Access denial when incorrect credentials are supplied.
- Operation logging for embedding, extraction, login, and admin activity.
- Administrator support for managing user access and monitoring logs.
System Workflow
The system separates its core workflow into four main processes:
- Authentication registers users, verifies login credentials, and issues access for protected operations.
- Embed Secret Data receives a cover file, secret payload, and optional password, then generates a stego file.
- Extract Hidden Data accepts a stego file and password, validates access, and returns the hidden payload when allowed.
- Admin and Monitoring manages user access and reviews operation logs for system activity.
Database Design
The proposed database schema contains three main tables:
- Users stores account details, authentication data, roles, account status, and creation time.
- StegoFiles stores metadata about generated stego files, including owner, original cover file, file type, size, storage path, and password-protection status.
- OperationLogs records important system activity such as embedding, extraction, login attempts, admin updates, operation status, messages, and timestamps.
Security Focus
The project emphasizes confidentiality, controlled access, and traceability. Hidden data is protected through user authentication and optional password-based extraction. Incorrect extraction attempts are rejected and recorded, allowing administrators to monitor suspicious or failed activity.
The design also accounts for practical steganography limitations, including cover-file capacity, supported media formats, and possible extraction failure if stego files are modified.
SDLC Approach
The project uses the V-Model as its recommended software development life cycle. This model fits the system’s clear requirements, security-sensitive workflows, and need for verification and validation.
